Kovacs took the lead on the shot put

Experienced Joe Kovacs took the shot put title at the Jesse Owens Invitational, which was held this weekend at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, and was just his first outdoor competition of the season.

Kovacs, 31, two times world champion (Doha 2019 and Beijing 2015), left an excellent mark of 22 meters and 72 centimeters in Columbus and thus took first place in the current season, surpassing the 21.93 that his compatriot Ryan Crouser had posted on April 24.

Kovacs’ series in the shot put contest was as follows: 21.91 on his first attemp, 22.72 on the second, 21.97 on the third, 22.28 on the fourth, 21.91 on his fifth and said goodbye to the competition with 22.32.

In Columbus, Kovacs was followed by Andrew Liskowitz and Jhon Meyer, both from the University of Michigan, with throws of 20.70 and 19.90, respectively.

It is the best result for Kovacs since the Doha World Championship, and it announces a fierce duel between him and Ryan Crouser in the Trials next June in Oregon and in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games.
